The day begins with a ride towards the northern side of Leh. Gangles View Point is the first pause, offering a sweeping panorama of the town as it wakes beneath the mountains. From here, the road gradually climbs towards South Pulu, where the air grows thinner and the terrain starker. The ascent to Khardung La is both challenging and exhilarating. Prayer flags flutter against a vast sky, and the sheer scale of the Himalayas makes the effort worthwhile. After spending some time at the pass, the descent back to Leh feels lighter, the road now familiar, the mind already full.
By late morning, the ride extends towards the Sham Valley, where the landscape begins to change character. The terrain near Moonland feels almost unreal, shaped by erosion into pale, rippling formations that resemble the surface of another world. Stok Palace stands as a reminder of Ladakh’s royal past, its modest museum preserving artefacts and stories from another era. Nearby, the Buddha statue overlooks the valley, inviting a moment of calm. The Gyaptha Thago Heritage site adds depth to the visit, offering insight into traditional Ladakhi life beyond the tourist lens. Returning towards Leh town, the pace naturally slows as the day leans into evening.
Leh market brings the town alive with colour and conversation. Small shops sell handicrafts, prayer wheels, and woollen goods, while cafés offer brief shelter from the cold. Above the town, Leh Palace watches quietly, its weathered walls echoing centuries of history. As the sun begins to dip, the ride to Shanti Stupa becomes almost instinctive. The road towards Spituk and the surrounding areas leads to Pathar Sahib Gurudwara, Magnetic Hill, and the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers at Sangam. The Kali Mata Mandir and the Hall of Fame add layers of spiritual and historical significance to the journey. On another route, Shey Palace, the famous Rancho School, Thiksey Monastery with its commanding presence, and Hemis Monastery with its museum showcase Ladakh’s cultural richness. Riding back towards Leh, passing the world’s highest PVR complex and nearby lodges feels like a quiet reminder of modern life coexisting with ancient landscapes.
